The Mystery of Aivazovsky
Few people know, but the famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, inspired by the landscapes of Gunib, painted the painting "Aul Gunib in Dagestan. View from the East Side" (1869). Today, there is a special observation deck on the plateau, which offers exactly the same view that the artist captured. Locals call it "Aivazovsky's Point," and it is the best place to capture the most impressive photo.
The way to Gunib
There are three ways to get to the village:
- By private car – from Makhachkala about 140-150 km. along picturesque serpentine roads. Coordinates for the navigator: 42.386133, 46.962603;
- By public transport – from Makhachkala to Buynaksk by bus or minibus, then transfer to a flight to Gunib;
- The excursion is the most relaxed option: tours are organized by almost all agencies in Makhachkala and Derbent, with a guide and transfer.
Gunib is a unique intertwining of dramatic history, untouched nature, and amazing hospitality. It is a place that stays in your memory for a long time and calls you to return. Come, and Gunib will tell you its legend.
