The Sulak Canyon is located in Dagestan and is one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is 1,920 meters deep, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon in the United States (1,830 meters). The canyon is a deep gorge with the Sulak River flowing through it. The walls of the canyon are made of sandstone and limestone, and they have a distinct layered structure. The canyon is located near the Chirkey Hydroelectric Power Station, one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in Russia. The height of the arch dam exceeds 200 meters. When water is released through the gates, a powerful stream is formed, which is an additional attraction for visitors.

The depth of the Sulak Canyon is such that if the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa (828 meters), were placed at the bottom of the canyon, its top point would not reach the edge of the canyon, leaving about a kilometer of free space above it. Additionally, the lower part of the canyon has a unique microclimate that differs from the conditions on the plateau, as it is warmer and allows for plant growth during the winter months when the upper part of the canyon is covered in snow. Descending to the bottom of the canyon requires special training and takes a significant amount of time, so it is only available to experienced hiking groups.
How to get there?
The nearest large settlement is the city of Makhachkala, the distance to the canyon is about 80 kilometers. Travel time by car is 1.5-2 hours. The route goes through a paved road through the village of Dubki, after which the serpentine begins, leading to the observation decks. For safe viewing, special platforms with a fence are equipped. Visitors are recommended to use a personal or rented car, also taxi services and excursion groups are available. The best time to visit is in the morning or evening, when the low sun provides the best visibility and illumination of the gorge walls.
