After skipping the May holidays, Russians are gearing up for trips during the long June weekend. Compared with last year, demand for hotels has increased most noticeably in Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, Saransk and Tobolsk.
Ahead of Russia Day, analysts at AZIMUT Hotels examined traveler demand for the June 12–14 long weekend. Alongside traditionally popular destinations such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and the cities of the Golden Ring, this year travelers are also showing strong interest in the Ural capital, Tobolsk and the Russian Far East, with bookings up by an average of 25% compared with last year.
A week ahead of the public holiday, occupancy at some AZIMUT Hotels properties had reached capacity. Hotels in St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Yoshkar-Ola, Khabarovsk and Kazan were 95–100% occupied. Smaller cities within convenient driving and rail distance of Moscow are also in high demand this year: occupancy at properties in Kaluga, Tula and Orekhovo-Zuyevo in the Moscow Region has also approached 100%.
High occupancy levels over the holiday weekend have been driven by pent-up demand, as many Russians chose to forgo travel during the May holidays. The favorable weather that has settled across central Russia is also encouraging short trips.
AZIMUT Hotels analysts note that residents of Siberia and the Russian Far East have become more active in traveling to neighboring cities, driving rising occupancy in Khabarovsk and Tobolsk. For the second consecutive year, the Caucasian Mineral Waters region has also seen steadily growing demand. The destination is increasingly being chosen not only for health and wellness holidays but also for family trips, including those with children. Sochi, by contrast, is seeing fewer visitors due to frequent disruptions to airport operations.
Experts note that Russians are increasingly choosing destinations beyond the traditional Moscow–St. Petersburg routes and are actively exploring smaller historic cities with well-developed infrastructure. Demand for trips around June 12 continues to grow, and travelers planning a spontaneous weekend getaway are advised to make their arrangements soon.
