The Skolkovo Innovation Center, established in 2010, now brings together over 5,000 companies, most of which operate in the regions. Residents of the center receive significant benefits, including tax incentives, so the number of applications grows every year.
To develop innovative technologies, clusters have been organized in 4 areas:
- IT (computer science and computers) – software development; data storage, processing, and recognition; robotics, artificial intelligence, and much more.
- Biomed (medical technology and biotechnology) – development of new drugs, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, genetic engineering, and biotechnology in agriculture and industry.
- Energy Technology – efficient use of resources in a wide variety of industries.
- Industrial Technology – innovative industrial technologies, including in the space and nuclear sectors.
As part of the clusters, a number of large companies have opened R&D centers at Skolkovo. Tatneft, for example, is developing oil production technologies at its center, and Sberbank has built Russia's largest data processing center. A branch of the Israeli Hadassah Hospital operates within the international medical cluster.
Promising developments by the innovation center's residents include bionic prostheses, luminescent ornamental plants, energy-efficient and prefabricated houses for the Arctic, unmanned air taxis, and many other interesting projects.
