The capital of Khakassia traces its history back to 1675, when the first Russian fortress, Abakansky Fort, was founded at the mouth of the Abakan River. Today, Abakan is the republic's cultural and educational center, and the starting point for tourist routes to the region's amazing natural attractions.
A visit to Abakan should begin with a visit to the Khakassian Museum of Local History named after L. R. Kyzlasov. It features fascinating archaeological finds, a collection of 17th-19th-century art, information about the construction of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, and much more.
One of the city's main architectural gems is the snow-white Transfiguration Cathedral with its seven golden domes and majestic bell tower, built at the turn of the 20th-21st centuries. Adjacent to the cathedral, the cozy Transfiguration Park is a favorite strolling spot for locals and tourists alike.
Abakan's topiary park, "Dream Gardens," features picturesque compositions of specially trimmed trees and shrubs, as well as replicas of famous architectural landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower. The park has a small petting zoo and a play area with attractions.
A couple of hours' drive from Abakan is the Ergaki Nature Park, renowned for its stunning landscapes, bizarre rock formations, and diverse flora and fauna. It offers ample opportunities for active recreation: the mountain ranges attract climbers, while hiking enthusiasts enjoy nature trails and tourist camps.
The Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, located on the border of Khakassia and the Krasnoyarsk Krai, is the largest hydroelectric power station in our country and a unique architectural structure. The station's 242-meter arch-gravity dam, built in 1968 on the Yenisei River, is popular with fans of industrial tourism. You can admire this masterpiece of Soviet hydroelectric power and the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape from an observation deck located 1.5 km from the dam.
The Khakass State Nature Reserve consists of nine clusters representing various natural zones with their characteristic flora and fauna. The reserve offers several excursion routes, where you can encounter wild animals in their natural habitat, admire the majestic panorama of the Yenisei River, and unwind from the bustle of the city in pristine nature.
While traveling through Khakassia, stay at the new, comfortable AZIMUT Hotel Abakan. We look forward to welcoming you!
