Aushiger Thermal Springs

The Aushiger Thermal Springs are located in the village of the same name on the banks of the Cherek River at the foot of the mountains. In the mid-20th century, geologists were prospecting for oil in this area and discovered a thermal spring at a depth of 4,000 meters. The water is sodium chloride, with an average temperature of 50°C. It is used both internally and externally. The baths have a wide range of uses – from skin conditions to spinal and joint problems, but it is best to consult a doctor before visiting. You can visit the therapeutic warm pools in both winter and summer.

Incidentally, the area around the village of Aushiger once housed the estates of the Supreme Prince of Kabarda, Temryuk Idarov, the same prince who formed an alliance with Ivan the Terrible in 1557 and gave him his daughter in marriage. It was from here that the future Maria Temryukovna departed for Moscow.

Chegem Waterfalls

These famous waterfalls are located on the right bank of the Chegem River, in the picturesque Chegem Gorge. Its width is only 15-30 meters, and the sheer walls reach 300 meters. According to legend, in ancient times, local girls threw themselves from the cliffs here to avoid being captured by enemies. The girls' hair, caught on the ledges, turned into beautiful waterfalls. There are three of them: Small, Large, and Main.

The most powerful of them, despite its name, is Small, Adai-Su (Maiden's Braid). Water cascades down through a stone chute from a height of about 30 meters. Further upstream is the Big Chegem Waterfall. The gorge here becomes significantly narrower, and cliffs overhang the road. A little further south is the Main Chegem Waterfall, the most picturesque. Its waters cascade from a height of 50-60 meters, and some trickle from crevices in the rocks—they're called "weeping rocks." In winter, the Chegem Waterfalls are no less beautiful than in the warmer months. Frozen streams of water transform the rocky walls into true works of art.
