The most interesting destinations for those who have already visited Nizhny Novgorod. Let's go on a journey!

The ancient and cozy town of Semyonov (78 km from Nizhny Novgorod) is the recognized capital of golden Khokhloma, the Semyonov matryoshka, the spoon-making craft, and the center of Russian Old Belief. Founded in the 17th century, this town with its small wooden houses adorned with intricate carvings is a true open-air museum!

Visitors can learn about the production of wooden artworks at the Khokhloma Painting enterprise. It was in Semyonov that Khokhloma was elevated from a home-based craft to a globally recognized art form. Today, Semyonov continues to develop folk crafts and actively participates in the cultural life of the region, organizing festivals and events.

Gorodets (70 km) is a museum town, a town of craftsmen, and a town of gingerbread! It is easily accessible by car, bus, or by the Valdai hydrofoil boat. The narrow streets, lined with merchant mansions and wooden houses adorned with intricate carvings, create a unique atmosphere of antiquity.

The town is rich in numerous museums, including the Countess Panina House, the Terem of the Russian Samovar, and the Gorodets on the Volga Museum. It was here that the art of Gorodets painting was born, becoming a symbol of the originality of Russian culture. Gorodets deservedly holds the title of «the city of craftsmen», attracting guests with master classes and the opportunity to purchase souvenirs created by the hands of local artisans. Be sure to try the main local specialty — Gorodets gingerbread!

Lake Svetloyar (130 km) is called the Russian Atlantis because of the legend associated with it about the mysterious Kitezh City, which disappeared under the lake's water during the invasion of the Mongol Khan Batu. To learn more about the legend and local traditions, we recommend visiting the Museum and Tourist complex «Grad Kitezh», located nearby in the village of Vladimirskoye.

The lake itself is protected by the state as an object of the Voskresenskoye Povetluzhye Nature Park. Fishing and boating are prohibited to preserve the environment, but there are designated walking trails called eco-trails. During your walk, you can admire the surroundings, find the holy spring of Kibelek, and visit the Kazan Chapel.

By the way, when you leave, you should make a wish. They say that the place is so powerful that your dream will come true.

Arzamas (112 km) has the status of a historical settlement and captivates guests with its Russian city atmosphere. In the heart of Arzamas, you'll find monastery complexes, and the main square is home to the recently restored Resurrection Cathedral, which features original decorations from the early 19th century and is the only Museum of Russian Patriarchate in Russia.

In the city's cafes and restaurants, you can enjoy delicious Russian cuisine featuring the famous Arzamas goose. The city used to raise up to 20,000 geese and drive them on foot to Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow. The Gostiny Ryad reminds us of Arzamas's glorious merchant past, where you can travel back in time and take photos of buildings with pre-revolutionary-style signs.

Chkalovsk (110 km) is a city on the picturesque shore of the Gorky Reservoir. It was here that the legendary pilot Valery Chkalov was born and raised, who in 1937 made a record-breaking non-stop flight across the North Pole to Vancouver. At the Memorial Museum, visitors can explore the hangar, which houses unique exhibits, including the aircraft that Chkalov flew, as well as a collection of aviation equipment from the 1930s.

The Museum Quarter also includes the Museum of Speeds. Here, visitors can delve into the life and achievements of the brilliant designer Rostislav Alekseyev, who was responsible for creating hydrofoil vessels and unique aircraft known as ekranoplanes, which are unparalleled in the world.
