North: Head to the Rybachy and Sredny Peninsulas to see the northernmost point of the region and the power of the Barents Sea.
Northern Part of the Region. Rybachy and Sredny Peninsulas
Looking to truly escape civilization? Welcome to the northernmost point of the Murmansk Region! This is a realm of sea, cliffs, and deserted shores.
A journey here is the choice of those seeking powerful impressions and dreaming of a complete reset.
Northern Part of the Region. Rybachy and Sredny Peninsulas
The Sredny Peninsula is separated from the mainland by the Musta-Tunturi Ridge, which translates as “Black Rocks.” It was here during the war years that German troops were stopped, and today memorials remind visitors of those events.
The nature here is no less harsh and majestic: be sure to see the rock formations known as “The Two Brothers” and the Red Stone Coast, where wind and water have created astonishing stone sculptures.
How to get there: Travel along the R-21 (E-105) highway for about 105 km. There you will find a checkpoint where you must present your passport, as well as a campsite with a café. From there, the main route to the peninsulas begins, but it is important to remember that beyond this point there is only off-road terrain. Access is possible exclusively by off-road vehicle, especially given the changeable Arctic weather. A regular passenger car cannot handle this route. It is also necessary to obtain a permit in advance to visit the natural park via the Gosuslugi portal. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter the peninsula area.
Northern Part of the Region. Teriberka
Teriberka is an old fishing village on the coast of the Barents Sea that became world-famous after the release of the film Leviathan.
It is here that the closest land access in Russia to the Arctic Ocean can be reached by car.
Just 120 km from Murmansk, and you find yourself in a completely different world: endless tundra, hills, mountain passes, and the raw power of the ocean.
How to get there: The easiest way to reach Teriberka from Murmansk is by car via the federal R-21 “Kola” highway. The distance is about 120 km, and the journey takes approximately 2 hours. Recently, almost the entire route has been paved, making the trip comfortable. Regular bus services also operate from Murmansk.
