Aushiger Thermal Springs: Warmth from the Depths and Local History
The Aushiger thermal springs are located in the village of the same name on the banks of the Cherek River, at the foot of the mountains. In the mid-20th century, geologists searching for oil discovered a deposit of thermal water at a depth of about 4,000 meters. Today, the water rises to the surface at approximately +50 to +60 °C, while the bathing pools are usually maintained at a comfortable +40 to +45 °C.
The water is sodium chloride, therapeutic-table water, and is used both externally, in baths and pools, and internally, when prescribed by a doctor. Indications for balneotherapy are broad, ranging from skin conditions to musculoskeletal disorders, but it is advisable to consult a specialist before visiting. The complex is open daily and offers pools at different temperatures, a hammam, a sauna, and relaxation areas.
Blue Lakes: Depth, Color, and Legends of the Cherek Valley
The Blue Lakes are a group of karst lakes in the Cherek River valley, approximately 30-55 km from Nalchik.
The best known is the Lower Lake (Tserik-Kel): its water is greenish-blue, and its temperature remains around +9 °C all year round, so the lake never freezes. The Lower Lake is one of the deepest karst lakes in the world; estimates of its depth range from 258 to 292 meters. Its water is remarkably clear, with the lakebed visible at depths of more than 20 meters. Swimming is not recommended, but diving services with instructors operate on the shore.
Farther upstream are the Upper Blue Lakes. They are smaller, with depths of about 17-18 meters, and are better suited to relaxing by the water.
Upper Balkaria: Where the Caucasus Meets Ancient Silence
Upper Balkaria is a place where the mountain peaks of the Caucasus meet the tranquility of ancient mountain villages, and time seems to slow down. Here, among sheer cliffs and rushing rivers, travelers can experience pristine nature untouched by civilization.
Walks along stone paths lead to medieval defensive towers that preserve the memory of the region’s warrior ancestors. This area is ideal for those seeking solitude, looking to challenge themselves on hiking trails, or simply wishing to breathe the pure mountain air.
Planning a Route from AZIMUT Nalchik
All three destinations can be conveniently combined into a single day trip from Nalchik: in the morning, visit the Blue Lakes and Upper Balkaria, which are located in the same Cherek valley; in the afternoon, travel to Aushiger to relax in the thermal springs after an eventful walk.
We also recommend visiting the Atazhukinsky Garden and Zoo, temples and squares of Nalchik and the botanical garden.
