Atazhukinsky Garden is one of Nalchik’s main attractions and a great idea for a stroll on any day of your stay. Founded in the mid-19th century, it is now considered one of the largest and oldest parks in the North Caucasus.
The garden’s main appeal is its atmosphere: wide avenues, fountains, gazebos, flower beds, and mountain views create the feel of a resort town. The park is located close to the city center, making it easy to include in your itinerary right after breakfast or before an evening stroll.
What to See in the Park
In addition to the familiar lindens and chestnuts, Atazhukinsky Garden is home to Japanese quince, oak-leaved oak, and Manchurian walnut. Near the floral calendar, you can see a century-old relic ginkgo tree – one of the park’s most fascinating “green” attractions.
Be sure to find the Lovers’ Tower. Built in 1867 at the direction of Prince Atazhukin, it is styled after a medieval fortress. Today, it is a popular spot for photo sessions, especially among couples and newlyweds.
Relaxing by the Water
The Nalchik River flows through the park, and several lakes are located on its grounds. During the warm season, guests can rent a boat or catamaran – a peaceful and scenic way to see the park from the water.
At the foot of Bolshaya Kizilovka is Kurortnoye Lake, created in 1960. Nearby is the “Istochnik Nalchik” drinking gallery, where visitors can try the local mineral water.
Cable Car and City Views
Next to Trek Lake, in the amusement park area, is the cable car station. It takes guests up to the observation deck near the Sosruko Restaurant on the summit of Malaya Kizilovka.
Plan your ascent for clear weather: from above, you can enjoy views of the lake, the park’s green spaces, and the surroundings of Nalchik. Before your visit, it is best to confirm the cable car’s operating hours on site.
Zoo and Family Entertainment
The zoo is located in another part of the garden. The animals are kept in spacious enclosures, while waterfowl have a pond with an island. Zebras and ostriches adapt well to the local climate and often remain in their outdoor enclosures even in winter.
For guests with children, the park offers amusement rides, walking areas, and cafés. It is best to set aside a separate half-day for the zoo and other family activities.
The zoo’s pond for waterfowl, outdoor enclosures, children’s areas, and nearby cafés are all mentioned in visitor descriptions of Nalchik Zoo.
The best time to visit is in the morning or evening. In the morning, the park is quiet, the soft light is perfect for photography, and the avenues are not yet crowded with tourists. In the evening, it is pleasant to stroll here as the daytime heat subsides and the air becomes especially fresh.
After Atazhukinsky Garden, we recommend continuing your exploration of the city: visit the temples and squares of Nalchik, the Botanical Garden, and the picturesque surroundings of the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria.
